A Hastings man is behind bars in St. Johns County Thursday after being released from the hospital on charges of attempted murder, deputies say.

David James Freer, 62, is also facing charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and is being held in the St. Johns County Jail on a $400,000 after the Sunday incident, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says.

Deputies responded to the 10,000 block of Vaughan Avenue - near where Freer lived - around 11:15 p.m. after reports came in of someone shot.

A man was shot in the head - allegedly by Freer, detectives say. The victim and Freer had reportedly been fighting when Freer left, got a gun, came back and shot the man once in the head.

Deputies say the victim is at Orange Park Medical Center in critical condition.

Authorities found Freer in his RV and took him to OPMC due to his injuries. When he was released from jail, deputies say they arrested him.
