Community captures burglars going through vehicles, pointing gun at surveillance cameras after stealing weapons

At one point, one suspect is seen brazenly staring into the surveillance camera pointing his weapon.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — Two suspects rifled through dozens of vehicles around the Oceanway community Sunday night. At one point, one suspect is seen brazenly staring into the surveillance camera pointing his weapon.

The suspects were captured on several different home surveillance cameras overnight between three and four in the morning.

"It's extremely threatening, this is my home, my place of peace, it feels liked a direct threat to me," said a homeowner who wishes to remain anonymous. "They did the same thing at other homes, came up and pointed the gun at the surveillance camera."

The vehicles that were broke into were unlocked, according to residents who live in Chandler's Crossing, but not everyone had items stolen. Some families said they could tell someone went through their car, but if they didn’t have guns or ammunition, then nothing was taken.

James Bivins says he always locks his car, but now he’s going to keep it in his garage too.

"I’m more worried about my children now," said Bivins. "It shocks me that this would happen here."

Micki Hamilton was equally shocked when she watched the surveillance video for the first time, gasping as she saw the hooded suspects going through different cars.

She has sensors around her property that keeps it secure. She says she saw something peculiar before work Monday morning that she now believes is related to the burglaries.

"There was a cellphone, a wallet, everything in a purse out there, you know how if you are rushing and drop it, right over there," she said.

She says she noticed an emptied out purse was left in their cul-de-sac.

Another family who spoke with First Coast News through their Ring doorbell was on their way to the gun range as a result of the burglaries. They said they wanted to get some additional gun practice in so they could feel protected in their home.

Later Monday evening, the neighborhood gathered together to discuss what happened, go over safety measures, and thank the people who help keep their neighborhood safe.

Residents told First Coast News that JSO came out Monday morning to investigate. They believe, in addition to weapons and ammunition, a car might be among the stolen items.

If you recognize the suspects please call police and lock your doors as part of the #9pmroutine.
