JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --  Riverside has its fair share of characters. One of those characters is Jordan Mixson. The 29-year-old west side resident has made quite a name for himself on social media.

Mixson runs the Instagram account @the_sockateur. In it, he takes pictures of himself wearing funky socks around Jacksonville. He’s slowly but surely managed to bring his follower count up to over 9,000.

The process started at his sister’s wedding.

“A couple years ago, my sister got married, and I was a groomsman in her wedding,” Mixson said. “With the tuxedo rentals, we all got these really cool pairs of striking bright horizontal striped socks and a matching handkerchief, and I just thought that was really cool.”

Mixson started buying socks for himself at places like Nordstrom Rack, and his collection slowly got larger and larger.

“One pair became two, became three, and well, I have about over 500 pairs of socks now, and counting,” Mixson said.

Once his collection started getting bigger, he started posting pictures of his socks on his personal Instagram account. But he didn’t do this for long because he didn’t want to be a nuisance to his friends.

“At the time I think I was starting to annoy some of my friends,” Mixson said. “So I decided to create an account that was completely dedicated to wearing statement socks.”

Mixson’s rise in followers has been slow but steady, but he’s now established himself as a well-known Jacksonville Instagrammer.

It’s even gotten to the point where some sock companies pay him to post pictures of him wearing their socks.
Despite this, he doesn’t seem to let the fame get to his head.

“I went into this not knowing what to expect, and I’m just really grateful,” he said. “And I hope to continue.”
